Refugee Week - Compass Collective

I was approached by a small grassroots theatre company called Compass Collective  to work as part of a team producing the animation for a music video. The animation was shown during their online festival for Refugee Week 2020 showcasing the creative work of talented young refugees. The song was written by the refugees from The Congo and talks about the struggles of their life in Africa.

Pattern

It was important to the song writers to have a strong sense of culture reflected throughout the animation. We decided to look at African fabric patterns to inspire the overall aesthetic of the animation.

Violence

The song spoke of the injustices witnessed by the young adults. War, rape and gun violence were just some of the points mentioned and it was important that we handled the topic sensitively but truthfully.

“Jean and Espoir [song writers] are amazed by what you have done. They can't believe their song has been made into such a beautiful, moving piece of art.” - Leah Gayer, Compass Collective.
